Fungi
Fungi are a diverse group of organisms that play essential roles in ecosystems, from decomposing organic matter and recycling nutrients to forming beneficial relationships with plants and other organisms. They include familiar organisms such as mushrooms, as well as microscopic fungi such as yeasts and molds.
While many fungi are harmless or even beneficial, some can cause disease in humans, animals, and plants. Human fungal diseases—also known as fungal infections or mycoses—can range from common superficial infections affecting the skin and nails to severe, life-threatening infections that occur when fungi invade deeper tissues or the bloodstream. These invasive fungal infections are particularly concerning for people with weakened immune systems or other underlying health conditions.
Our Approach
Founded in March 2026, the Fungi Task Force aims to raise the profile of fungal diseases, promote the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics, and produce evidence-based working papers to inform policy and guide research priorities.
Fungal diseases are increasingly recognized as a global health challenge due to factors such as the growing number of vulnerable populations, climate change, and the emergence of drug-resistant organism. Improving awareness, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of fungal infections is essential to reducing their impact on public health.
Mandate & Scope of work
Elevating awareness of fungal diseases and resistance
Providing policy guidance, including the development of economic and business models for fungal infections, antifungal therapies and diagnostics
Identifying and facilitating sustainable funding mechanisms
Driving progress in fungal research and interventions through strong collaboration with leading national and international research groups
Together, we will advance the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of fungal infections, accelerate innovation, and improve outcomes for patients worldwide.
