REVIVE Webinar – Market interventions to improve access to antibiotics for resistant infections

Access to appropriate antibiotic treatments can be lifesaving. Unfortunately, not only is the pipeline for new antibacterial drugs to address the growing burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) inadequate, even after antibiotics are successfully developed, they are not necessarily accessible. One study showed that only 12 of the 25 new antibiotics that entered the market between 1999 and 2014 were registered in more than ten countries. Many antibiotics to treat drug-resistant infections may face small, fragmented and unpredictable markets. For small and unpredictable but growing markets, it is important to carefully balance supply and demand, support sustainable and affordable access, and incentivize appropriate use through market interventions such as coordinated procurement and stockpiling.

This webinar will invite experts in market shaping, describe how market shaping interventions in other areas may be applied to AMR, and discuss potential interventions that may improve sustainable, reliable, and affordable access to critical antibiotics.

Speakers: • Procurement interventions: Brenda Waning (GDF) • Market intelligence, sharing and coordination: Wesley Kreft (i+Solutions) • Financial instruments: Hema Srinivasan (MedAccess) • Exploring how economic and procurement tools can improve access to antibiotics in LMICs: Kim Faure (SECURE)

Moderator: • Mirfin Mpundu (ReAct Africa)
